MONDIALI SVIZZERA 1954: Finalissima
Berna, Wankdorf Stadium, 4 Luglio 1954

WEST GERMANY-HUNGARY 3-2
The final match of World Cup 1954 sees comparing the favourite Hungary against West Germany. The two teams have already met in the first round with an unequivocal result: 8-3 for Hungary. According to what shown during the tournament, it would take a miracle for the Germans against Golden Hungary, who for the occasion with a little row of arrogance put on the pitch again its champion and captain Ferenc Puskas despite injury that has kept him from 2 weeks to rest. And the field seems to give reason to the Hungarian coach, as Puskas after 6 minutesfrom start find the ball on a rebound of the German defense after concluding of Kocsis, throws his left and Aranycsapat is already ahead! Two minutes later, Germany makes a harakiri: backpass of Kohlmeyer and Turek sensationally miss the ball by hand, with Czibor the faster to collect and deposit in the goal, with lots of greetings to the World Cup! All as per prediction, the class of unbounded Magyars is too much for to the firmness and strength of the Germans. But football is not (thankfully!) a mathematical rule, and sometimes the heart of an oppressed people can push a team beyond its limits. Almost by force of despair Rahn is thrown forward on the left and center in the goalkeeper area where Lorant involved in a lopsided: Morlocks behind him touches to a goal by reopening the game. We are only at 10′ and Germany believe it, crushing Hungary with a pressing that does not breathe or think, after 2 times, always from the left, a corner of Fritz Walter is corrected in a tap-in goal from Rahn: is a draw! Germany loosens its grip and Golden Hungary back to grind his way to the game: Hidegkuti at 23′ tow chest area, adjusts the ball and throws a pitch over the right surgical flapping in full on the net to the right of Turek! Then blends furious succession in Hungarian area but the result does not change until the end of the first half. The game is wide open even after the break, with quick reversals of field: at 60′ sensational action for Hungary with a cross of Hidegkuti, dribbling back to Kocsic serving Puskas in the middle area, which leaves the latter pretended sublime passing the ball in the middle of their legs to serve the right wing Toth comes running after him, but it seems inevitable goal while Turek diving into an empty net and then also the defender Kohlmeyer, with Toth despairs for the double chance wasted . A few minutes after Hungary also hit a crossbar with a header Kocsis, but also on the tip before Germany went close to scoring with a shot to the left from the top right corner of Rahn and Grosics flying to reject. They are the decisive minutes: Puskas launches Czibor alone before the door, desperate to stop him Turek, the blade rolls on the feet of Hidegkuti but his conclusion is on the pole outside. Germany is rather striking to 6 minutes to go: Rahn creates the shot that makes a foray into the history, left Grosics perfect beat. 3-2 and the ball at the center for Hungary, Bozsik is passing deep for Puskas, shot and left on the net but the referee canceled out for offside much doubt. Vehement protests from Hungary, Puskas had been leveled! But there is still time for the last occasion, a right-Czibor that once again the incomparable Turek rejects corner. And this is the rejected that gives the World Cup to Germany. The German victory did a lot of sense, “a result inexplicable” wrote the newspapers of that time. Three months after the final 4-German holders of the disease were found jaundice and remained for several months away from the playground, a situation that did raise concerns about the excessive use of a primordial doping by the Germans during the World in Switzerland. But the story remains a mystery, for lack of hard evidence, I prefer to think that Hungary was defeated by a Golden Miracle fact of bad luck and great German heart: the Miracle of Bern.
