Il match, pur essendo un’amichevole, era stato presentato dai media come “La Partita del Secolo”, perché poneva a confronto i “Maestri del Calcio “ inglesi contro i Campioni Olimpici ungheresi, imbattuti da più di 3 anni. La folla di Wembley di tutto si sarebbe aspettato tranne di assistere ad una sconfitta, e invece questa partita dimostrò che l’Ungheria d’Oro era di un altro pianeta rispetto al compassato, monotematico e ormai superato calcio inglese. L’impatto alla partita dei “marziani” ungheresi è devastante: dopo 45 secondi di gioco Nandor Hidegkuti scaglia un sensazionale bolide da 30 metri all’incrocio dei pali, 1-0! Ma quello che viene dopo è anche peggio: la tattica rivoluzionaria ungherese con Puskas e Kocsis punte centrali, Hidegkuti centravanti arretrato (il primo “fantasista” della Storia del Calcio) e 2 ali atomiche come Budai e Czibor manda totalmente in affanno la fossilizzata retroguardia inglese. Una triangolazione perfetta Hidegkuti-Puskas-Hidegkuti manda ancora in gol quest’ultimo al 9’ ma l’arbitro annulla per fuorigioco quantomeno dubbio. In contropiede Mortensen e Sewell costruiscono il gol del pareggio inglese, sorprendendo i centrali Lorant e Zakarias con una veloce incursione, ma è solo un fuoco di paglia, perché l’Ungheria d’Oro continua a sciolinare il suo gioco armonico e stupendamente bello da vedere, con passaggi di prima e tocchi di magia. Puskas e Hidegkuti incantano con assist e dribbling e dopo un paio di salvataggi affannosi la difesa inglese capitola al 20’ dopo un’azione confusa guidata da Puskas e Czibor e conclusa in rete dal solito Hidegkuti. Hanno inizio 10 minuti da incubo per l’Inghilterra, nei quali l’Ungheria d’Oro da l’impressione di poter segnare a ogni azione, tanta è la superiorità fra le due squadre: al 24’ uno dei gol più belli mai visti su un campo di gioco, Czibor fugge a destra indisturbato, cross per Puskas che non ha un controllo felice, ma rimedia con un sensazionale movimento con la suola del piede destro sulla palla che lascia a bocca aperta il pubblico di Wembley e manda per terra il povero Billy Wright, pluridecorato capitano inglese… poi il suo proverbiale sinistro a gonfiare la rete. E tre minuti dopo ancora loro: punizione di Hidegkuti e tocco di Puskas a spiazzare il portiere, 4-1. Alla mezzora la partita è già conclusa, l’Ungheria d’Oro tira il fiato e gli inglesi mettono in campo il loro orgoglio: dopo un miracolo di Grosics su Robb, al 37’ accorciano le distanze con Mortensen. Nella ripresa finalmente sale in cattedra Stanley Matthews, che nel primo tempo era talmente fuori dal gioco da sembrare il guardalinee, e dalle sue imprendibili fughe sulla destra nascono i maggiori pericoli per la difesa ungherese: il pubblico di Wembley crede nella rimonta, e perciò la Magica Ungheria riprende ad attaccare per smorzare gli animi. Giocata spettacolare di Puskas che libera Kocsis, palo, ribattuta fuori area della difesa e bolide imprendibile di Bozsik all’incrocio: 5-2!

Poco dopo la premiata ditta Puskas-Hidegkuti regala un’altra perla: assist di esterno sinistro del primo dopo un controllo al volo fantastico e destro in corsa del secondo per il 6-2. Wembley applaude i nuovi “Maestri del Calcio”. Una lezione che non verrà mai dimenticata, un risultato tennistico solo lievemente ridimensionato dal rigore trasformato da Ramsey dopo il placcaggio di Robb da parte del portiere Grosics. E’ l’unica opportunità costruita dall’Inghilterra fino al 90’, mentre l’Ungheria d’Oro continua a regalare spettacolo e azioni da gol fino al fischio finale dell’ottimo arbitro Horn.

The match, though friendly, was presented by the media as “The Match of the Century” because it posed to compare the British “Masters of Football” against the Hungarian Olympic Champions, undefeated for over 3 years. The crowd of around Wembley would be expected to attend except a defeat, and instead this game proved that the Golden Hungary was a world away from the staid, monothematic and outdated English football. The impact to the game of “Martians” Hungarian is devastating: after 45 seconds of the game Nandor Hidegkuti throws a dramatic fireball into the top corner from 30 yards, 1-0!
